A Study on Knowledge & Practice of Maternal & Child Health in Kwang Ju Area


Abstract
A study was perfomed to find out the knowledge & practice of maternal & child health toward 228 housewives. This survey was carried out from the 14th of April to the 24th of May, 1975. The results obtained are as follows:
1. The average age of the housewives investigated was 33 years. Those housewives, who are 25-29
years old, made up 29. 4% of this surveyed. This group is larger than any other age group.
2. The survey shows that 32. 5% of the total housewives had a high school education. 3. In regards to religion, 50. 9% of housewives showed to have none.
4. The average number of living children was 2. 8. 33% of those tested had 2 children.
5. Prenatal care: 14. 5% of the housewives had regular prenatal care. On the other hand, 42.1%
had not received regular prenatal care.
6. In regard to the place of delivery, 82. 6% showed home delivery.
7. 65.4% of the housewives were aware of colostrum being found in their milk-feed their babies
this milk. 33. 3% of the housewives were unaware of colostrum-such that it was notfed to
them.
8. An the knowledge about the appropriate time of weaning, more than 50% of housewives thought that weaning should take place only within 7 to 8 monthl from from birth.
9. The major source of nutrition was breast milk in 77. 6% of the cases.
10. More than 80% were preven to have received small pox and poliomyelitis immunimation respectively, on the other hand, low proportion of housewies showed typhid fever vaccination -only 14.9%.
11. Vaccination place: The majority of the housewives were vaccinated in clinics or hospitals.
